Humura Showcases Sustainable Solutions at the Muhanga District Open Day

Humura Organisation proudly participated in the Muhanga District Open Day, where we presented our activities and showcased our washable, affordable, and environmentally friendly menstrual pads and reusable diapers. These products offer practical solutions for women, girls, and families with limited financial resources. They also reduce environmental waste and create opportunities for women to develop skills and generate income.
Humura Organisation Showcases Sustainable and Empowering Solutions at the Muhanga District Open Day
Humura Organisation was proud to participate in the Muhanga District Open Day, an important community event that brought together local authorities, organisations, entrepreneurs, partners, and community members to present their activities, achievements, products, and contributions to community development.
The Open Day provided Humura Organisation with a valuable opportunity to introduce its work to the wider community and demonstrate how locally developed solutions can address some of the social, economic, health, and environmental challenges affecting women, girls, children, and vulnerable families.
During the event, Humura showcased its washable and environmentally friendly menstrual pads and reusable baby diapers. These products are designed to provide practical, affordable, and sustainable alternatives to disposable menstrual pads and diapers.
The exhibition attracted the interest of visitors who wanted to learn more about the products, how they are made and used, and the positive difference they can make in the daily lives of women, girls, children, and families.
Supporting Menstrual Health and Dignity
Access to safe menstrual hygiene products is essential for the health, confidence, comfort, and dignity of every woman and girl. Unfortunately, many women and girls from low-income and vulnerable families cannot always afford to buy disposable menstrual pads every month.
When menstrual products are not available, girls and women may be forced to use unsafe or uncomfortable alternatives. Some girls may miss school during their menstrual periods, while some women may find it difficult to participate confidently in work, training, community activities, or other aspects of daily life.
Humura’s washable menstrual pads offer an affordable and reusable solution. When properly used, washed, dried, and maintained, the pads can be used multiple times. This helps reduce the monthly financial burden associated with purchasing disposable products.
By improving access to reusable menstrual products, Humura aims to help women and girls manage menstruation with greater dignity, confidence, safety, and comfort. This initiative also helps create an environment in which menstruation can be discussed openly, respectfully, and without shame.
For Humura, menstrual health is more than the availability of a product. It is connected to health, education, equality, participation, dignity, and women’s rights.
Reducing Financial Pressure on Vulnerable Families
Disposable menstrual products and baby diapers are recurring household expenses. For families with limited income, buying these products regularly can place significant pressure on an already restricted household budget.
Reusable menstrual pads and baby diapers can help families reduce these repeated expenses. Instead of purchasing new disposable products every month or every week, families can use properly maintained reusable products over a longer period.
This is particularly important for households experiencing poverty, single mothers, women without regular employment, families caring for young children, and other vulnerable community members.
The reusable products showcased by Humura are therefore not only environmentally responsible products. They also represent a practical response to the financial challenges faced by many families. By reducing recurring household costs, families may be able to use their limited resources for other essential needs such as food, education, healthcare, housing, and transportation.
Protecting the Environment Through Reusable Products
Disposable menstrual pads and baby diapers generate a large amount of waste because they are used once and then thrown away. Since many disposable hygiene products contain plastic and other materials that do not easily decompose, they can remain in the environment for a long time.
Improper disposal can contribute to environmental pollution, blocked drainage systems, unhealthy surroundings, and increased pressure on local waste-management systems.
Humura’s reusable menstrual pads and diapers provide an environmentally friendly alternative by reducing the number of single-use hygiene products that must be discarded.
Every time a reusable product replaces several disposable products, the amount of waste entering the environment is reduced. Although this begins at the household level, the collective impact can become significant when more families and communities adopt reusable alternatives.
Through this initiative, Humura encourages communities to understand that environmental protection is not only the responsibility of governments or large institutions. It can also begin with the choices people make in their homes and communities.
The use of reusable products supports a culture of responsible consumption, waste reduction, cleanliness, and sustainable living.
Creating Skills, Employment, and Income-Generating Opportunities
An important part of Humura’s initiative is its potential to promote women’s economic empowerment.
The production of washable menstrual pads and reusable diapers can be transformed into a practical skills-development and income-generating activity. Women and young people can be trained in product design, tailoring, material selection, quality control, hygiene standards, packaging, marketing, sales, and basic business management.
These skills can help participants create products that respond to real needs within their communities while also developing opportunities to earn an income.
By connecting social needs with economic opportunities, Humura helps women move beyond being viewed only as beneficiaries of assistance. Women can become trained producers, entrepreneurs, community educators, and agents of change.
Income-generating activities can help women become more financially independent, contribute to their household income, support their children’s education, access healthcare, and participate more confidently in family and community decision-making.
This approach contributes to sustainable empowerment because it combines immediate support with the development of long-term skills and opportunities.
Promoting Local Solutions to Local Challenges
Humura believes that communities have the knowledge, creativity, and ability to develop solutions to the challenges they face.
Washable menstrual pads and reusable diapers are practical examples of how locally made products can respond to several challenges at the same time. They can improve menstrual health and dignity, reduce household expenses, protect the environment, create jobs, and strengthen local economic activity.
Producing these items locally can also reduce dependence on costly imported or disposable alternatives. It keeps knowledge and economic opportunities within the community and encourages innovation based on local realities.
When local women are involved in developing and producing solutions, the products are also more likely to respond to the real needs, preferences, and experiences of the people who use them.
Raising Awareness and Challenging Menstrual Stigma
Humura’s participation in the Muhanga District Open Day was also an opportunity to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene.
In many communities, menstruation is still surrounded by silence, misinformation, embarrassment, and stigma. These attitudes can prevent girls and women from asking questions, seeking support, or accessing appropriate menstrual products.
Public events such as the Muhanga District Open Day create a space where menstrual health can be discussed respectfully and openly. By displaying reusable menstrual pads and explaining their purpose, Humura helps normalise conversations about menstruation and encourages community members to recognise menstrual hygiene as an important health, education, and development issue.
Menstrual health should not be treated as a private burden that women and girls must manage alone. Families, schools, community leaders, health professionals, civil society organisations, and public institutions all have a role to play in creating supportive and informed communities.
Building Partnerships for Sustainable Community Development
The Muhanga District Open Day allowed Humura to interact with community members, local leaders, potential partners, entrepreneurs, and other organisations working to improve people’s lives.
These interactions are essential because lasting community development cannot be achieved by one organisation working alone. Addressing menstrual poverty, environmental pollution, unemployment, and household vulnerability requires cooperation between communities, civil society organisations, government institutions, schools, health facilities, businesses, donors, and development partners.
Humura welcomes partnerships that can help expand training, improve production capacity, strengthen product quality, increase community awareness, and make reusable products accessible to more women, girls, children, and families.
With the right support and partnerships, this initiative can reach more communities and create a greater social, economic, and environmental impact.
More Than Products: A Pathway to Dignity and Empowerment
The products presented during the Open Day represent much more than washable menstrual pads and reusable diapers.
They represent:
Dignity for women and girls who need safe menstrual hygiene products
Confidence for girls who want to attend school and participate fully in daily activities
Relief for families struggling with the repeated cost of disposable products
Protection for the environment through reduced household waste
Skills for women and young people seeking practical vocational opportunities
Income for individuals who can produce and sell reusable products
Independence for women working toward greater economic security
Innovation through practical and locally developed solutions
Community resilience built through knowledge, cooperation, and sustainable action
This integrated approach reflects Humura’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities while promoting dignity, environmental responsibility, and long-term economic empowerment.
